Ninja Training: the God's Honest Truth

Only two ninja groups existed (wrote Fujita), the Iga and the Koga groups. No official school for ninja training ever existed, primarily because:

1) Nobody ever volunteered to become a ninja. Every recruit was either born into the life, or was kidnapped into it as an infant boy.

2) The training that Fujita described is so horrifying that even the most rabid martial arts fan would scream like a girl.

For example: every bone in a ninja's body was, ideally, double-jointed. This would allow a ninja to squeeze through impossibly small openings, disengage unexpectedly from any martial arts hold or attack, etc.

But to achieve this ideal fully double-jointed state, the ninja "trainers" would repeatedly yank and crack every bone in a new recruit's body in and out of joint, painfully stretching each ligament past its limit.

Another example: to increase lung capacity, trainers plunged the children into deep pools and held them beneath the surface. Immersions quickly increased to two, four, five minutes.

Clearly, ninja training methods are nothing you'd ever want to pay for! Unless, of course, you enjoy giving your money to people who make Inquisition Priests look like kindergarden teachers.

Ninja Abilities Revealed!

Fujita's also described the means and methods that ninja used to achieve their goals.

To climb a sheer wall

1) Dampen your ninja socks and a small towel.
2) Tautly stretch the moistened towel between your hands, which you should hold approximately shoulder-width apart.
3) Take a running start towards the wall - spring onto the wall like a spider - immediately stamp the balls of your feet up the facade while seesawing your towel against the wall.
4) Lather, rinse, repeat.

(Author's note: I have tried this. I don't recommend that you do, though. Ouch.

To move unnoticed through an area with no cover:

Know all about a person's natural "blind spots." Know when to move; when to stand still; when to breathe; when you can fool someone into thinking they're not looking right at you; etc. Don't forget your Psych 101! You can make people believe that they're seeing what they EXPECT to see, NOT what is actually there!

To walk on the ceiling:

Houses in feudal Japan consisted mostly of light wooden frameworks on the walls and ceilings. A ninja could grip these between their incredibly strong fingers and toes and actually "walk". (NOTE: this will not work in rooms with plaster, stucco, or acoustic ceilings.)

Ninja Weaponry

A ninja avoided open battle whenever possible. The ninja did not waste time defending himself: he either killed his opponent or, if injured or trapped, instantly killed himself by shoving a dagger up

through his jaw, slicing past his tongue and into the base of his brain.

Generally, large weapons like swords were not particularly useful to a ninja. They tended to make too much noise and limited flexibility.

Instead, a ninja armed himself with small, poison-tipped items easily hidden in pockets and sleeves. Common ninja weaponry included shuriken/throwing stars (palm-sized, star-shaped discs of black metal), sewing-needle sized needles, and nagebishi (very much like a child's jacks, but with razor-sharp points). Most of these were tipped with poison to increase their effectiveness. Small daggers and strangling cords completed a ninja's arsenal.

Puny weapons carried devastating advantages. Plunging a tiny, poisoned needle into the back of an unwary samurai's neck caused instant, untraceable death. Whipping a cord around a throat and stabbing from behind killed quietly.

In Conclusion

Ninja were extremely skilled, unimaginably dangerous people to hang out with.

They were unburdened by any codes of honor, making them perfect for various dirty jobs like arson, execution, espionage, terrorism, and most notably, assassination.

They were masters of martial arts that specialized in things like breaking bones (koppo) and in deadly use of their thumbs (yubijutsu). So yeah, they're unbelievably cool - but they were masters of what we Americans consider a dirty, dirty business, with never an eye towards the simple pleasures of sewing Quilts or of singing on Broadway.

Sooooooooooooo ... and now they're the main attraction in the World's First Martial Arts Musical Comedy!

Hope this pages helps you to understand why Ed, Brucie, and Megumi are such incredible heros to emulate!

How To Become A Ninja is a dramatic demonstration of the Ninja's art, as well as in-depth instruction for the serious Ninjitsu student.

Ninja Clothing

The ninja uniform was called a shinobi shozoko. It was typically only one of three colors, but usually the ninja wore black, because most of their work took place at night. The other colors were white, for blending in the the snow, and a camouflage pattern when the ninja had to blend in with the forest.

When in full uniform, the ninja's flesh was all hidden, all except a small slit around the eyes and his hands. The tabi boots had a slit in between the big toe and the second toes. This was to make it easier for climbing and scaling walls.

The shinobi shozoko had many pockets all through it, inside and out. This was for storing all the small tools and weapons he needed, such as poison, shuriken, knives and so on. The ninja also carried a small, primitive, first aid kit, filled with potions and solutions.

Not all jobs required that the ninja wear the shinobi shozoko. Sometimes the ninja dressed up as priests, peasants or even samurai, depending on the job.

I received mail from a reader concerning the clothing worn and would like to share it with you.

"The ninja historically did not wear black. Its not a natural environment color and tends to stick out even in the darkest nights. For night time operations they wore dark blues, dark greys, and browns. The ninja gi is overemphasized in pictures and movies and makes the viewer believe that it is all the ninja wore. They probably wore it a lot less than most people think and only reserved it for special missions where such a garb would be practical and efficient. True, the mask muffles breathing noise but it also impairs hearing. Also, if a ninja were captured it would be overtly obvious of his intentions wearing a gi.

The important thing to mention is the ninja's utilization of resources and improvisation. For instance, a ninja stuck with light clothing in an unexpected situation could rub mud or dirt on his clothing, hands, face and teeth to tone down" - Micheal Paglia

"I have read accounts of ninja, when wearing dark clothes, dyeing the clothes red in advance. The red would not be noticed over the darker natural tone of the cloth. If the ninja bled, the blood would not show because the tone of the cloth would not change. This psychological tactic promoted the superhuman image that the ninja earned, as it created the illusion of a warrior who could not be cut." - Cliff

Another reader writes, "The ninja uniform, as we know it, is basically an interpretive creation from the mind of Dr.Hatsumi. Takamatsu sensei, his teacher, wore hakama. Much of ninjutsu as it is practiced today has about as much in common with its historical counterpart as modern soldiers have with paladins."

 Cat's eye sundial

The Ninja devised an ingenious method of telling time by using a cat's eyes. Since a cat has such sensitive eyes, they adjust frequently as the sun passes through the sky. This picture illustrates how the Ninja used this knowledge to approximate time:

Ninja Poisons

The ninja were very knowledgeable about poisons. Poisoning a victim was as effective as stabbing them, but with very little mess or chance of failure. Once the poison was ingested by the victim it was already to late. The poisons were mostly organic based, but some were taken from animals.

One method was to take the fungi poison out of the blowfish or puffer fish. This poison is very strong and can kill in small doses. Another animal based poison was the bufo marinus. The bufo marinus is a large toad with an extremely toxic poison behind its eyes. This poison was often used on darts, arrows and spear tips.

Spiders and scorpions were also used. Not always just the poison extracted from them, but sometimes it was just as easy to slip a couple of scorpions in the bed of the victim.

One of the organic poisons used was made from common fruit. Cyanide was extracted from a variety of sources, such as apple seeds, plum seeds, cherries seeds and many more. It was readily available to the ninja and was used often.

Tomato and rhubarb leaves also held a poison. Eating the leaves cause cardiac problems, ultimately resulting in cardiac arrest.

The amanita phalloides is a deadly mushroom. The poison in the mushroom was 10 times more powerful than that of cyanide. Eating the mushroom was certain death, and it was easy to slip a piece of the mushroom in almost any meal.

The poison could be used in various ways, depending on the situation. For example, if the ninja could slip it into the victims food while its being prepared. Without knowing what kind of danger he was in, the victim would eat the food infested with the poison. Not all the poisons used by the ninja were fatal, some of them were used to merely paralyze or cause blindness. It was not always necessary to kill.

Another thing the ninja did was dip their weapons, such as the shuriken or their sword, in the poison. This was so when it punctured the skin of their target, the fast acting poison would take its course, causing much more devastating than the blade itself.

Knowing the direction

The Ninja, like sailors, used the stars to navigate at night but they also discovered 2 other ways of determining direction. One is through the use of a tree stump. If the Ninja came across the stump of a tree, he simply looked at the growth rings to tell which direction was North. The rings become narrower and closer together as they approach North and wider and further apart as they approach South.

Another, more accurate way, of determining direction was by the use of the sun and 3 sticks. This method accurately determines True North. The Ninja found a fairly clear area that wasn't overgrow with trees or bushes, etc. then he found a stick that was about a foot long and 2 twigs whose length didn't matter. The Ninja drove the foot long stick into the ground and observed the shadow cast by it and then placed one of the twigs on the ground, at the end of the shadow. He then waited about 15 minutes for the shadow to move and placed the other twig at the end of the shadow's new location. The Ninja then placed his right foot on the first twig and his second foot on the second twig and the Ninja was now facing True North.

Rest

Even the Ninja had to rest from time to time and one of the best places to hide was in the tops of the trees. Since Ninja wore an exceptionally long sash, he was able to climb to the thick, upper branches of a tree and then tie his sash from limb to limb in a "spider web" type pattern, creating a serviceable hammock to rest in and to watch for approaching enemies.

Nature

Since the Ninja had to survive in nature, they became trained naturalists capable of distinguishing edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, trapping, preparing and cooking animals, building shelter, finding water, and making fire.

Water

A few methods of finding water were by studying the insects in an area. For example, if there was a high concentration of ants or crickets, he knew there was water nearby. Another way of finding water was by recognizing the kinds of plants that live near water. If the Ninja found any of those plants, he knew water was near.

Box of Crickets

Another tool used by the ninja was a simple box of crickets. They would carry with them a small box of crickets to cover up any small sounds made by the ninja as he quietly advances on his target. The noise made by the crickets was not uncommon, so they samurai thought nothing of hearing them..

Secrets of Ninja Stealth

Guidelines for stealth walking
Excerpt from "The Mystic Arts of the Ninja" by Stephen K. Hayes

1.       Maintain balance control by allowing your body weight to sink and be carried by deeply flexed knees.

2.       Remember to breathe along with your movement. Unconsciously holding your breath can unknowingly produce unneeded muscle tension, and could result in gasping release of breathe if you are startled or accidentally unbalanced.

3.       Stay alert to the entire scene. Do not become so engrossed in watching your feet that you do not notice other people an elements entering the surroundings.

4.       Use all joints for movement, emphasizing fluidity through the engagement of the ankles, knees, and hips for stepping. Avoid the lazy and dangerous habit of stiffening knees and swinging the entire leg from the hip.

5.       Maintain your weight and balance on your grounded leg while you move the other leg into position to bear the weight. When absolute silence is a must, avoid distributing your weight over both legs at the same time.

6.       If practical, allow your hands to float lightly in front of and beside your torso, one arm higher and one arm lower, to detect possible obstructions before your committed body weight encounters them.

7.       Pause and hold your position if you feel that you have accidentally caused too much noise. Listen for signs that you were heard, such as the movement of others or the immediate silencing of background noise following your slip. Sink a little lower on your knees to physically relax that could normally jump into your body with alarm. Take a deep breathe and release it slowly to further relax. Continue your pause for as long as you feel is necessary to regain composure and allow possible listeners to decide they did not hear anything after all.

8.       Be as patient as possible. If speed of travel is not important, take as much time as you can. Impatience and the resultant hasty movement that it encourages are the greatest dangers to the person who must move silently without detection.

9. Keep your movement appropriate to your surroundings. Do not go to greater lengths than necessary to conceal your movement, while at the same being aware of what others entering the area may see if they cannot hear. Total silence may not be needed when moving through wooded or densely populated areas where scattered noise is a natural part of the environment. Also be aware that low profile crawling or sliding ma be the only way to move silently without being seen in some locations.

Ninja's letters

In addition to the Chinese "kanji" letter system, the Japanese in the past used 48 "katakana (square writing)" characters representing pronunciations from "I" to "N". The "ninja" letters form an encoded version of these characters, and were composed by combining seven left-half components and seven right-half components. As this results in 49 combinations of the left-half and right-half components, it was convenient for representing the 48 "katakana" characters. Some of the "ninja" characters look like Chinese "kanji" characters and some did not. Before using the "ninja" characters for actual correspondence, the two parties determined the encoding rules by agreement. In case previous arrangements were not possible, they wrote their letters using ordinary characters and had the message carrier take special precautions to prevent the interception of letters by the enemy. Sometimes, they divided a letter into three parts and had three carriers carry them separately. When it was necessary to hinder identification of the person writing the letter by disguising the style of the handwriting, this was achieved by writing with a brush hanging by a string from the ceiling. The letter carriers made efforts never to have them separated from their own bodies and lost by sometimes inserting them below their hats, using it as a hair-tying tool, sewing it into the collar, and so on. Some also carried the letter by putting it in an eggshell or walnut shell.

Always put the clan and the mission before yourself.
If you are captured, escape.

Live in shadow; never reveal your true self.
If it is not necessary to the mission to kill, don't kill.
If it is necessary to the mission to kill, don't hesitate.
Honor the Buddhas.
Never srike a member of the same ryu.
To leave the ryo is to die; No nukenin (rogue ninja) may be allowed to live.
Your master's enemies are your enemies.
Accept missions only from your chunin.
Never arrange a contract yourself.
Never question or refuse a mission.
Strive for peace, harmony and enlightenment in all things.
Always keep supplies hidden, away from home, in case you must flee.
